Did you know Volcan Mountain was on the short list for the Hale Telescope, but the prize went to Palomar Mountain? I didn't until I stopped by the chimney on the way down and read the sign. The chimney is all that remains from an outpost built to evaluate weather conditions. I like Palomar and its telescopes, so this nugget of info made my day. Otherwise, the hike is so-so, with the actual peak and marker on a rock camouflaged under a tree (walk behind the picnic table). Oh, and it was a chilly morning, still only 39F at 10:30 AM according to the thermometer by the Birds of Prey sign by the signal tower.
