This was Peak #3 for 2021.
Crisp, clear morning with temps in the high 30s to start the day. The trails here are among the best I’ve seen in the Bay Area — well maintained (or, at least new — although one spot near one of the bridges is a little soupy from recent rains and can use a re-grading). Got to the parking lot a little before 8 am, and there were plenty of spots. However, it was completely full when I finished before 9:30. Despite signs prohibiting this, there were many cars parked along Mt. Umunhum Road.I passed only a couple hikers on the way up, but many more larger groups of hikers on the way down. I’m sensing that it’s probably a good idea to arrive early to ensure a parking spot – at least on weekends.
Trail up was easy on the well groomed trail. Enjoyed the varied flora from wooded creek canyons to chaparral. For the final push up, I am deeply appreciative of those who built the 200 or so yards of steps leading to the summit. I’ve done some trail work, and what they have here is exemplary.
The views from the summit were great on a sunny morning. Was able to see Mt. Tam, Mt. Diablo, Mission Peak, Mt. Saint Helena, and Mt. Hamilton. Could sorta figure out Rose Peak and Mount Sizer as well as Montebello Ridge where Black Mountain is located.
