I was the first car in the parking lot which has been paved since the last time I was here; and hit the trail at about 6:20 with my headlamp for some light in the pre-sunrise darkness even with the full moon setting. The desert was completely silent as there was no wind and the desert animals were all still sleeping. I had the entire trail to myself as well as the summit. The only other souls around were the desert birds singing their desert sunrise song once the sun made its debut over the Tucson mountains and a herd of sweet, beautiful deer eyeing me close to the trail as I passed by them.  The summit was all mine and fairly windy although I knew the solitude wouldn’t last and I finally came upon the first humans I had seen all morning at about 2/10 of a mile below the summit; and then more and more people after the half way point of the return trip, many asking where I had been and what time I started… the very early morning was worth all the peace and solitude. And back at the car, the newly paved parking lot was completely full.  Wasson Peak is truly a treat.
