This was actually day two. I mixed up my dates. Another beautiful, blue sky day with temps in the 70's and time to summitpeak for. The first part of our day was pretty easy hiking and we were lulled as we hike MonroeTrail to Dean Trail. It was quiet and very pretty. Then along came the Long Trail and it was time to climb, shimmy and scramble. All the the things that make a hike fun. After our 9 mile hike the previous day, this 6 mile was pretty easy. Stopped at the summit for lunch with a view and enjoyed the breeze at the top. The views from Camel's Hump were just as beautiful as the views from Mt. Mansfield.
Heading back down, we detoured off the Alpine Trail to visit the crash site of a bomber that crashed in 1944 while on a training flight.. The wings of the plane are still on the mountain and there is a small memorial to the crew. All but one died in the crash. As we continued our hike, I thought I would enact my own crash and took a tumble on some wet rocks. Nothing to serious and after a little blood loss and some brief first aid – thank you Hannah and Bella, we were back our way.
We enjoyed a fairly leisurely hike down Monroe Trail back to the car to end another great hike with some pizza before our drive home.
