We got lucky and got parking spots in the Red Box Picnic area parking lot even though we got there at around 10 AM. Crossing the 2 to get to the trailhead was a bit sketchy as the crossing area is on sort of a blind turn in the road. The weather was cool (mid 60s) and sunny without a cloud to be seen. The first couple of miles were a pleasant, almost totally flat, windy trail that followed the curves of the hillside. It felt like a nice stroll in the mountains which was actually a warm up for the butt kicking climb to the top. Someone painted a really cute wooden sign and left it at the top for photos. After a well earned lunch break at the peak, we began the even more difficult downclimb back the way we came. It was mostly loose rocks and dirt which made it hard to keep my footing even with hiking boots that have good traction. I questioned my life choices when a group of teenagers in Vans sneakers sped by us down the mountain. Overall I would highly recommend this peak to anyone in the LA area that wants a fun yet challenging day hike.
