Full moon hikes had always been a favorite of mine and Mission Peak tops it all. I had done the full moon hikes quite a few times during different seasons and this time a bunch of friends from my running group joined me as well. We all met at the Ohlone college parking garage at 5:00pm and started the hike shortly after. For some it was the first time and obviously they were all quite excited about it. The Spring weather was pleasant and still quite bright when we started the hike. With beautiful views of the rolling hills all around blooming with wildflowers and cows leisurely grazing on them, we had a great time climbing uphill all the while chatting. With everyone being pretty fit and regular runners, they all aced like champs and we reached the peak in about 1.5 hours. It was quite windy at the top and we got to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. The day also marked the beginning of Holi, the Spring color festival of India which we capped with a mini celebration at the peak with some yummy delicacies. It soon started getting dark and the glowing full moon started rising from behind the mountains like an orange ball of fire. The March full moon is called the Worm Moon and it was just breathtaking! Continuing our chats with ghost stories started the hike back down and reached the trailhead right on time and it will surely be remembered as one of the fun memorable hikes!

Go for it! Check the moonrise time and plan your hike accordingly.
