This was my 2nd summit of San G from this trailhead (4th overall) but this time the effort was more brutal than before. I could feel the altitude this time. No complaints! I knew it wasn’t going to be easy after a 30-mile bike ride and a few the day before thankfully the trail is gently and well-graded and shaded for most of the ascent.
After the required summit selfies and a short rest, I headed back down via the Dollar lake trail where I helped three hikers, who were also descending, find their way back to the Vivian Creek Trail. Other than that I saw maybe five people the entire 11.5 mile trip down. I was beyond exhausted and although this was my 4th time hiking San G, felt I should’ve prepared better for this. I’m really glad it reopened; you could see some of the damage caused by the El Dorado fire last year. Remember to apply for a permit, as you’ll need one to hike San G from either trailhead (Vivian Creek, Fish Creek, or South Fork). It’s free but there’s a limited daily quota: https://permits.sgwa.org/
