Hot Springs mountain is a little over 10 miles out and back. Alltrails says it's 9.8 but I had 10.26 on my iWatch and my husband had a little more on his phone. The trail is steep with little to no shade for the first 2 miles, but then levels out and there is a little bit of shade throughout the rest of the trail. The bugs were terrible!! Not just a few flies here and there, but swarms of biting flys that were so annoying for the majority of the hike. We took our bandanas and were trying to swat them away as much as possible, but we still have bites all over us. We had hoped to have our lunch at the top, but the bugs were so bad we skipped it and got out of there. The summit has a ladder to the top, with a bit of a scramble to get to the actual peak. It was a little too sketchy for me, so I climbed the ladder and got as close as I could, but was a little nervous to go to the very top (I was just a few feet away). Overall a nice challenging walk that had some great views, and lots of wildlife. We saw deer, coyotes, lots of lizards and some really cool birds. We had our 11 year old son and small dog with us and it was doable for both, but both hike regularly so they are not beginners.
