Some hikes are too nice.
The predawn drive to the Stinson entrance of the Matt Davis trail rewarded me with a moon lit view of the ocean and California coastline to the north and a hint of sunrise coloring the coast to the south.Â
I found parking right at the trailhead and started my hike right as the sun was rising. Making my way to Pantoll Campgrounds, I was treated with views of Karl partially covering the San Francisco skyline. By the time I reached West Point Inn, treasure island started to appear. I made the mistake of following the main trail (careful to make sure you take the smaller trail on the left) and made my way down the east peak and then connected with the Vic Haun and Temelpa trails. Although steep, the views were great and I only saw one person that whole time – I guess everyone else made the left.Â
The summit was filled with great views, opportunities to scramble through the rocks, and places to eat lunch. Unfortunately, I needed to hurry back in a hurry so I ran the whole way back to the car. Somehow that was even nice since the ground was nice, soft, and well maintained.
