Conditions were good and I enjoyed the cool shade of the forest trail. I started at 7:15 and was at the summit at 9:30. Unfortunately it was smoky/hazy with little visibility. The trail was empty except for 2 other hikers. Peaceful walk back to the trailhead.

  1. How many miles was the hike in total? I’ve seen a lot of conflicting information. Was there any scrambling through loose rock or was the trail pretty hard packed? Maiden Peak is the last one I have left to do and I’m a little nervous about it as there doesn’t seem to be a lot of good information ?

  2. I know exactly how you feel as it was the same for me! Especially after completing the South Sister I was dreading another long hot steep hike. It is marked as 5.8 miles one way –my apple watch ran out of power and shut down after 7.5 miles. I think the total millage was approx 12+. The trail is mainly through the forest on hard pack until the last mile so it was a comfortable temperature and the grade was gradual. There was very little loose rock on the final mile. Last mile was out of the wood. Cloud cover/visibility was disappointing but I have seen great pictures of views so hopefully it will be better for you. It was a long way from Bend to the trailhead (2 hrs) I started at 7:15 on the path and summited at 9:45 so 2.5 hours. My return trip was a little more than 2 hours. Good luck! You got this!

  3. I responded to your questions but don’t see it posted so I will briefly respond again.
Maiden Peek is way out from Bend–I think it took me 2 hours to get to the trailhead. The hike is 5.8 miles each way so roughly 12 miles total. Mostly on hard pack through the forest and also a gradual climb. The last mile is exposed but the trail was still very solid and not difficult. It was nothing like South Sister which I found draining. It took me 2.5 hours to summit Maiden Peak and a little more than 2 hours to return. I also felt uninformed on this hike of what to expect. The most difficult thing for me was finding the trailhead as it was so far from Bend in an area I was unfamiliar. But I didn’t get lost finding it which I sometimes do. Good luck to you! I’ll watch for your completed post?
