On this brisk morning in April, a large group of Girls Who Hike LA members met up at Vincent Gap and started the ascent of 40 switchbacks to the top of Mt. Baden-Powell. I had never done this hike before and had no idea what to expect. I absolutely loved the drive to Vincent Gap due to taking the route around the northern side of the San Gabriels with all of the rolling hills and Joshua Trees–the route that takes you through Wrightwood. It was gorgeous! I had no experience with hiking in any snow, and we didn't know what to expect so we all came prepared with microspikes. As we started our ascent our group became several smaller groups of girls with similar paces. After hiking up many of the switchbacks we eventually found patches of snow on the trail–our little group didn't feel it was necessary to use our microspikes however, there was only one sketchy part so we took it slow and used our trekking poles. We finally arrived at the top and took a long lunch break while we waited for the rest of our group to get to the top. Once everyone was there we took a big group picture and started to head down. We made it down quickly. This is definitely the easiest of the peaks on the list I have ever hiked and I would do it again any day. One of the highlights of hiking this trail is that it is part of the PCT, which means depending on when you hike it you get to talk with a bunch of thru-hikers. Since my husband and I were planning on thru-hiking the JMT in the summer, I was very excited to meet thru-hikers.
