7am Start – the most dangerous part of the hike is crossing Ortega Highway from the parking lot to get to the trailhead. 1st time doing this hike and with the trailhead 50 minutes from my home, had to give it a try. It is up hill in both directions. Seen more animal Poop (not dog) on this trail then maybe ever. At second Junction we stayed on Bear Canyon which was a lower route with more shade. Hike is legit when you cut up to the peak for last tenth of a mile or so, it is steep. At peak in 2 hours, had a snack and photo opp, then back down we went. Meet / Talked to Vivian James (6-peak Challenger) on steep section. At Junction we took Bear Ridge Trail for a different view. Little higher up and does not add much to the total distance. Made room for a pair of horses that were on their way up. Back at trailhead 9.7 mi. and total moving time 4 hours. Totally glad I was able to do be out and do this hike with my friend Doug. (who has 1 peak left to make the finishers party)
