We got a 6 am start on Saturday morning, dropping one car off at the Red Box Trailhead and then driving to Colby Canyon to start the hike.
We’d read via Social Hiker that the rock scramble on this route was shorter and enjoyable, so that’s what we decided to do!
I will say, on that front, did NOT expect the death climb that it actually was! The trail wound up and along a ridge (as my memory serves, certain parts stuck out more than others!) until reaching a first bit of rock climbing, which was a good jolt into the actual dangers of this trail.
After hauling ourselves over that, there was a bit of flat until hitting the final push to the peak, which entailed a good 400 foot rock climb to the top. Terrifying. UTTERLY terrifying. Thankful for whoever was kind enough to paint arrows on the rocks though, those helped massively!
At the top, we fittingly ate some strawberries than descended an easy few miles down the ridge to Red Box.
Wild hike!
