The road is now open to Vincent Gap. That is, if you are coming from Wrightwood, and Big Pines. SR2 is still closed from Islip Saddle to Vincent Gap.
The trail itself is mostly clear up to 8300’, with a number of snowy patches, particularly on the western portions of the switchbacks.
Above 8300’ the trail becomes nonexistent and is 100% snow covered. At this point, the only route is straight up.
I used micro-spikes and an ice axe after the bench, then switched over to crampons at 8300’.
It is a long steep grind up to the ridge line, then a short but steep stroll to the peak.
If temperatures stay above freezing at these higher elevations, it will soon become difficult to get around in the deep snow due to post-holing, slipping, and sliding. If you decide to hike to any of the higher elevation peaks during this time of transition, please be careful.
There’s only one you, so always tell someone exactly where you are going, and approximately what time to expect you back.
It’s the least you can do.
