I woke up at 11:30 PM Fri night (well, never really slept!). Set out from my home in San Diego at 12:30 AM to arrive at the Icehouse Canyon parking lot at 2:30 AM. Set out at 2:45 AM. Was pleased to see several other hikers in the parking lot getting ready; they all had the same idea! I was about 15 minutes ahead of them and completely alone. Although the trail at times opened up to a beautiful night view of the town lights below, it was daunting leading up to the Saddle. Had a few bats swoop down near my head! They must've been attracted to my headlamp. I arrived at the summit around 5:30 AM, just before it started getting light. The other groups below arrived just in time to catch the first rays of the sun. Very nice group of people of whom I've since become friends on Instagram. Hiking for three hours up over 4,000 feet in the dark is well worth watching a spectacular sunrise. These pictures don’t do it enough justice; it’s like being on the edge of forever!
