Straight calf burner right off the bat for the first 1/3 of the hike, but don't be discouraged. I felt that the incline of the switchbacks got better the higher you went up, and closer to the top became shorter in length too. There are a lot of trees and shade, but still some exposed areas, so would still be helpful to start this hike earlier in the morning. I thought the saddle was the coolest part of the hike with the Wally Waldron tree and amazing views on both sides.
