This was the 5th challenge and by far the hardest physically for me. This one kicked my glutes, hips, and knees. That last bit down after the ski hut was painful to my bones. I was so proud of myself and for the first time felt like I earned the title to be called a HIKER. There were some gnarly spots on the Devil's Backbone and those micro spikes saved my life. This was a real challenge fighting the crazy wind gusts and the icy trail with sheer drop offs if you slip. We fought our way to the top and the exhilaration of making it was the biggest highlight of my 2022 year. I probably won't do it again in the wintertime, once was enough. This time I had the right pair of hiking waterproof boots and my feet stayed dry and warm they whole day (unlike Baden-Powell). The lesson I learned on this hike was to keep low in the wind and to see where the path ends before you start each microburst of trail on the last leg of the summit. Slow and Steady wins the race.
