I needed one more summit to complete the 2022 SoCal Six Pack, so I chose Mt Wilson to try to avoid any chance of snow. It was a beautiful day on Mt Mt Wilson, blue shy, green and moist trail surroundings, the sounds of running water and wind in the trees, and crisp temperatures. I brought my former coworker, Chris Winters, along as my hiking partner. I had hiked Mt Wilson once before in 2018, but it was the first time for Chris. We began hiking about 6:30AM, and arrived at the big observatory at about 11AM. As we were taking our photos, we were treated to see the observatory roof open up to the sky, and rotate back and forth. With the roof open, we were able to go inside to the observation gallery, see the telescope lit up by daylight, and see the roof close! We then walked over to the museum, and we were able to go inside and see the exhibits without a big crowd. On our way down, we missed the pipe gate to the old toll road, and ended up walking down the pave road. We became concerned and turned around, and were able to find the correct way back down. When we reached Orchard Camp, we were surprised by a large brown bear foraging for food. We remained calm, and were able to get the bear to retreat to the trees, so we could continue down the trail. We returned to the car at about 4PM.
