Beautiful overcast day, thank goodness as this was a very long hike. Just to get to oat peak is 5.5 miles so round trip has you already at 11 miles to that point. Some areas of trail due to lots of broken rock made it slippery so you had to be careful no to fall on your back side. One way to Alan peak was just over 8 miles. We had talked to some Sierra club hikers at oat peak and they were taking the coon trail down, which sounded like a better option at the time as we calculated that although it would drop us down on the park road 2 miles from the starting point we would trim 1-2 miles off our return and instead of being almost 18 miles we clocked 15.7 miles. Coon trail had multiple bridges crossings, but it was a quick drop in elevation so if you have knee issues you might want to go back the way you came in. Lots of poison oak and pacific blackberry but they look very similar, so watch out as encroaching on trail. We bagged our clothing on return as no way to avoid it. So far none of us are showing any contact symptoms.🤞🏻and all clothing and equipment are getting a thorough cleaning with poison oak removal soap.
