On that bright Sunday morning of June 11, 2023, I found myself at the foot of Mount Storm King. Only the distant songs of birds and the crunch of my boots on gravel disrupted the stillness. As the sun peeked over the horizon, I kicked off my hike at 8 am. The forest seemed to wake up around me, bathed in the morning's first light and rustling with the soft morning wind.

The trail started throwing challenges at me as I climbed higher and the trees grew thicker. Every step brought something new: entwined roots sprawling across the path, rock-strewn stretches demanding a careful climb, and the infamous rope section that always made my heart pound.

Amid the rugged beauty, I caught glimpses of Lake Crescent from between the trees. Its shimmering waters, resembling a bed of sapphires, pushed me forward. When I made it to the summit, the view took my breath away. Lake Crescent lay beneath me, cradled by lush green hills, under a sky so blue it seemed to mirror the lake. Everything paused for a moment in that spot, including me.

Descending, I had the chance to relive the thrill of the ropes section enjoying the overlook of the sapphire lake. It was a victory lap of sorts, with every step echoing my day's achievements. As I retraced my path through the dense, lively forest, I felt a newfound connection with the mountain. This tough but fulfilling trek up Mount Storm King was more than just a hike – it was a story of resilience, awe, and a day spent in the embrace of nature.

Pictures taken from the top, and last picture from the base of Lake Crescent. This wasn't my last trek of the day, decided to do Marymere Falls, as well as Hoh Rainforest for an enchanting day in the Olympics. Wrapped it off with a sunset ferry back towards Seattle from Bremerton as Taps played on base – taking in the orange red glow on the horizon as the day slipped into night.

The Olympics always hold a special place in my heart; far away – but oh so worth the journey – cannot wait until Hurricane Ridge re-opens.
