Started early, parking is inside/near a private area. No problems parking. Views were great on this hike. We climbed above the clouds quickly as it’s pretty steep, but not hard with poles. Lots of flowers including cactus, with pollinators out. Some young berries forming. About 1/3 up there were lots of deer flies that were hungry. My partner was ready with head net, gaiter, long-sleeve shirt and long hiking pants…I had none of that — not a good idea. The flies weren’t terrible, but annoying and followed and we’re more a bother at 2 stops and at the top. I ended up donating blood from my neck, arms and legs and welts like mosquito bites lasted for a week.
Met ranger in the tower at the top who was looking out for spot fires and lightning strikes. As you might suspect, great views all around from up there. Palomar observatory is visible on last turn to top of summit.
When going down, you realize how steep it really was going up. We headed down at a fast pace. My hiking partner had a misstep and crashed hard, but survived it well. He still donated blood a different way.
There are some hot spots on this hike, so water and loose fitting body covering and face netting should at least be in your pack if bugs are out.
Overall very worth it.
