Bear Mountain is the most “Sedona” a hike can get. This trail perfectly showcases Sedona’s chaparral ecosystem, a weird intermediary niche that’s not quite desert but not quite forest either. This is the only place you’ll ever seen an ocotillo growing literally right next to a ponderosa pine.

That being said, Bear Mountain Trail #54 sneaks up on you. Its AllTrails numbers don’t look too intimidating, but a series of “false summits,” a steep diagonal sheetrock trail, and a fair bit of scrambling all mean you’ll exert a surprising amount of effort for a five mile hike.
