We started the hike at the Maple springs trailhead, it was 5:30am and dark with lots of mist and a little light rain, visibility was about 50 yards, temp low 40's. the trail itself was in very good condition both going up to Santiago peak and coning back via Modjeska peak off the truck trail.  Note going up to Maple springs the gate was open but the road needs a high clearance SUV /Truck, we drove that part in a Subaru Outback and it was painfully slow.
The top of Santiago peak is dominated by transmission/Cell towers and in the mist the looked eerie and foreboding, we took a quick look around and then headed to Modjeska peak which was clearer apart from a lot of trash and broken beer bottles (why can't people carry their stuff out?)
As we started early even at the top we had a lot of mist (still before 10am) and only got small snippets of the views on the way down, but the hike was very enjoyable, by the time we finished and where driving back a lot of truck traffic coming up so it took a little longer to get down due to passing stops etc, but everyone was safe and knew how to pass on single track roads .
Summary a great little 2for1 hike
