On 2/3 with a great group of Bay Area Hikers we took the out and back trail to bag our 2nd peak at Lake Berryessa! We hiked over 15 miles and gained over 3500 in elevation on a cloudy day.
We hit the lush green trail at 815am and followed the creek that was flowing but passable at the few points we had to cross it. The trail was not too muddy but wet enough to make sure to watch our steps. There was no real rain, but it misted us a few times. Many pictures were taken by all, and hiking stories shared.
The trail is narrow and steep in places, but we took it easy, and everyone made it. There are still a few landslides that take a bit of talent to get past, but we all took our time to get across.
This is the second time I have hiked Berryessa, and I cannot catch a break with the weather not being cloudy. Note to self, hike it later in the year dummy!
We made it to the summit and celebrated with pictures and congratulations. It was cloudy and a bit windy, but spirits were high, and we had a good lunch break. There is a glass Geocach jar at the top. DO NOT OPEN IT! It is nasty and if you do open it, you will release the plague. How do you think Covid stated? I bet you it was from this jar!
The group then doubled back on the trail, and we were back at the cars by 350pm. In total over 7 hours of hiking.
It was a good day and totally worth it to hike Berryessa Peak! Again, next time I will be hiking this trail later in the year to hopefully avoid the weather. Thanks to all who joined me to conquer the 2nd peak of the 6-peak challenge. I will post my next hike soon.
I have posted all the pictures and videos of the hike to this page. Also, there is a link to the All-Trails route we took.
