Described elsewhere as a ‘beast', this day hike is certainly a thing to plan for. We set off early at 8:30 am, choosing the perfect day with light overcast and temperatures around 60 degrees. We prepared with extra shoes for the three river crossings, poles for the steep descents, and a whistle to deter the pigs. Along Blue Ridge Road, we could see as far as the Sierras, pausing to take breaks and enjoy the scenery. According to my GPS, we hiked for 6.5 hours but with breaks included, we completed the hike in 8.5. I would hike it again, perhaps even as an overnight camping trip when the weather is a bit warmer.
