Ahhhhmazing hike….In part due to the fact that we took Friday off from work to do it. We left Santa Cruz at about 6:30 am; it was a beautiful drive, albeit a windy road. As usual, I got car sick. We were one of two cars in the parking lot when we arrived. The bathrooms were open and clean. The air was crisp, the sky was blue, and the landscape was lush. We started our hike right at 8 am. The peaceful hike offered many stunning views, wildflowers, and a chance to visit the spectacular backpacking camps. The first river crossing required strategy for sure – an extra pair of socks is highly recommended, just in case. After the river crossing, we started the climb- and we climbed and climbed and climbed- at times, it was very steep. I noticed that many people did the out-and-back route. IMHO, the loop is the way to go. It may have been a little longer, but jackass trail was beautiful and very different from the rest of the hike. About three miles before the end of the hike, there is an opportunity to sit by Coyote Creek – I recommend using it as time to prep for the final push to the end. Most of the last three miles are uphill.
