Camped Friday night at Javelina CG. Took the suggestion of starting at North Wilson TH where there was less people in the morning and pit toilets at the TH. Saw no one for several hours (until after this trail and the other approach met on First Bench).
Almost 2 miles initially of constant, moderate incline. A break of flattish mesa up to the trail intersections on First Bench and the climb resumes.
At the next intersection you have the choice of going left to Sedona Overlook or right toward Canyon Overlook. I took Sedona Overlook after debating skipping it and very glad I did! It is only 0.8 miles RT and mostly flat after the initial little hile up. The worst of the climbing is over at this point and not much more to reach this beautiful view! In fact, it is undoubtedly far more worth the effort than Canyon.
Although the 3 miles RT Canyon adds are cake after the preceeding trek, it is mostly old burn area with a multitude of burned and felled trees and no cover. Although Canyon Overlook was by no means bad, I would skip it if I were ever up that way again. A bit of a letdown after the previous.
My trek was over 10 miles. I did enjoy it as a change to Phoenix desert landscape.
