Today we hiked Mount Baldy, aka Mount San Antonio. We parked at Manker flats. Don’t forget to purchase an Adventure Pass for parking. The trailhead starts near the restroom. The route we took was the loop and up the bowl and saddle to summit. It was pretty intense climb from the start. I was sucking wind most of the way to the summit. Pretty much climb 1000’ per mile, for 4 miles to summit. Embrace the suck, it’s worth it for the view at the top. From the start to the ski hut, trail was in good condition. Once you pass the ski hut, you have to cross a snow field to get to the trail that leads you across the bowl. The trail was exposed most of the way, but there was still several snow fields you have to cross. We climbed in Hokas and used trekking poles. Micro spikes were not needed, but could help if you have them. Trekking poles are a must. Took approximately 3 1/2 hours to summit. Hung out, ate, and took photos on the summit for an hour. You pretty much have a 360 degree view from the top. Amazing!! Started our decent using the devils backbone trail. Wind picked up and was at least 40mph on the way down. Devils backbone was not really as big of a deal as many comments show. Took us 8 hours to complete the hike. Went 10 miles and climbed 4100’.
