I was nervous for my first solo peak of the year but when I pulled into Red Box parking lot at 6:00 a.m. and saw six-plus cars already there, I was no longer nervous because I knew I would have company on the trail! The first mile is a nice warm up with a little climbing. The second mile is along a nice narrow trail that hugs the mountain. The third-plus mile to the peak is a scramble up and over multiple false peaks that can be mentally draining and taxing on the body. My limbs were super shaky during the scramble up and down which told me I did not feed myself properly on the hike and my conditioning needs some attention. Even though the peak is just over 6,100 feet, it is a beast to get to it! I met a ton a wonderful people on the trail and on the peak, and saw a lot of butterflies, bee flies and lizards. I did not see any snakes but the big annoyance was the bugs! Lots of horse flies and mosquitoes! Ugh! This hike was definitely humbling but a good challenge to know where my body is at and how I can improve!
