Hike Log

Bernardino

Trailhead:

San Bernardino Peak trail

Type of Hike:

Day hike

Trail Conditions:

Trail in good condition

ROAD:

Road rough but passable

Bugs:

Bugs were an annoyance

Snow:

Intermittent snow – not hard to cross

First three miles are nice gradual switchbacks.  Wildflowers in full force, and so were the bugs.

Opened up and most of the forest has been burned out.  Slowly recovering.  The changing landscapes were probably my favorite part of this hike.

Handful of snow patches before the Washington monument.  Then the spine up has a long sowbank covering a lot of the trail up.  Was kind of annoying, but manageable.  Never needed spikes.

After the spine the snow clears until the final ascent to the peak.  Small post with an arrow points towards the trail, but it was covered with patchy snow.   Just go up, the peak is there.

I tried to add a couple more peaks in, but after Bernardino, the snowbank on the ridge was a constant nuisance.  Lost trail under it too many times to count.  Decided to call it a day and head back.
