ERIC'S REVIEW: Would I recommend this trail YES. This is my favorite trail in the San Gabriels. Is this trail hard? You betcha. But there are many aspects to this hike that make it super enjoyable. HERE ARE SOME OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT THIS TRAIL a) Many switchbacks going up. But, here's the good news . . . Mostly shade until you reach tree line. b) The trail alternates between moderate incline to fairly level sections. This makes it less strenuous. c) The trail is not as rocky as some. Easier on you feet. d)Usually a nice breeze coming in from the desert. e) Beautiful views the entire way up. f) Great 360 degree views of Mt. Baldy and other peaks at the top. g) The entire trail is part of the PCT. I often run into PCT Through Hikers along the way or at the peak. Fun to talk to them and hear about their adventures. h) At the top there is a monument to Lord Baden-Powell. He is the founder of the Boy Scouts of America. The monument has been there since 1957! i) Even though the peak is treeless, There are many shady areas to rest and have lunch nearby. Here are ERIC'S TIPS for the Mount Baden-Powell Trail. 1) You will need a $5 permit to park. Stop at the Grassy Hollow Visitors Center to purchase. 2) The parking lot area has restrooms and picnic tables. 3)Be aware there is no place to filter water on this trail. 4) Have breakfast on the way to the hike or lunch after at the Grizzly Bear Cafe in Wrightwood.
