For those who know the song “Jack Straw”, it was June 28 so not quite the “Fourth Day of July” and it was leaving Lake Poway and not “Leaving Texas” and it may not have been eagles that filled the sky, but it definitely was hot under a hard sun and deep blue sky, and raptors were circling the peak as I reached Potato Chip Rock and the summit of Mt. Woodson.  Couple notes:  1) the trail is very well maintained. I’ve climbed it before and didn’t remember all of the stone steps and trail work, but it’s great, 2) the views are awesome, starting with an overlook of Lake Poway and all of the way up to beautiful views of the Pacific and Southern California, and 3) there is an early sign asking “did you bring enough water?” it’s a straight up hike, in beautiful chaparral but totally exposed. I climbed in the afternoon and took advantage of every shade I found but most of the hike is under the sun. So I was very glad that I carried an almost full 3L Osprey hydraulics in my pack.  I like to carry more H2O than I think I’ll need and was glad that I did, because I was able to share it with a hiker that I met who ran out of water on the way up.  The song says my old buddy your moving much too slow, but that’s ok too. Take it slow. Enjoy the views and this fantastic hike.
