On 8/24 through winds, hail, and snow I with a group of hikers completed my 6th Peak to complete the Lake Tahoe challenge for 2024.
we started out at 7:30 AM from the Mount Rose parking lot. It was already cold, wind, and snowing lightly intermittently.
After the first half mile, we were sheltered by some other mountains and the forest which let us to waterfall about 2 1/2 miles into the trip.
At the waterfall, we took a break took some pictures and had a quick snack. The waterfall still had ice formed on it from the freezing temperatures overnight.
We press on with the wind still blowing, but not as bad and snow lightly falling, but not really sticking.
The last miles were the wind and the snow really picked up. You were very exposed on this last mile to the summit and the snow was sticking to the trees and bushes.
As we hiked, the wind became more consistent and my best guess it was blowing steadily at 60 miles an hour or even more at times.
we got to the top, took a few quick pictures before as quickly as possible to get out of the wind. At the top or water was beginning to freeze and we were getting very cold. Fortunately, we were prepared for this weather, but still, this is very unusual for August.
We made it 3/4 the way down to the tree line where we finally got some relief from the wind and snow. We took a break, ate, and saddled up for the rest of our trip back.
On our way back, we were encountering other hikers coming up, asking us about trail conditions, and weather. We advise them. It was incredibly windy. We observe some people hiking up very unprepared for what they’re about to get into.
From the waterfall back to the cars is about 2 1/2 miles where it began to snow again and was very beautiful.
in total, we hiked over 10 miles gaining 2800 in elevation in about 4 1/2 hours.

It is usually quite windy on the top of Mount Rose, but you guys had a really tough day. I can only imagine what it was like up there. Glad you made it safe and sound.
