We started out near the start of the dirt road right off I-80 which ended up extending our hike quite a bit. But we started out early enough to enjoy cool temps on our way up to Castle Peak. The trail was moderately steep but nothing crazy. Near the summit it gets a bit confusing to find what is truly “the summit” so we had to backtrack at times. AllTrails makes it look like the summit is the next rock cropping over but it looked too sketchy to us. Nobody we talked to wanted to scramble over there. After a quick snack, we decided to add Basin Peak because we had done all the hard work to gain elevation. Turns out it was a wise decision because it was an easy jaunt to that peak and then a nice trail in the shade as we looped back via the PCT and saw the Peter Grub hut on our way to the car. Fun day!
