It was a New Years Day hike, the large parking lot had many spaces open, less than a dozen or so cars in it at ~0720 when I parked.
First time on this trail, even though I only live 35 or so minutes away in Orange County, however I drove in from Carlsbad where I spent New Years eve. It was easy enough to find the trail head and get started. The trail was in good shape, it had rained the day before so was wet but no real mud, just nice and compacted soil. The hike was pretty straight forward, I had mapped ahead of time and studied the trail intersections so navigation wasn't a problem and it has good markers. I started at 0728 hiking solo, I had planned the hike for several days and was glad to see the rain clear overnight/New Years eve.
The weather was cold I left my gloves and stocking cap through the duration of the hike. And with the wind blowing especially at the top I needed my long sleeve shirt layred over a tee shirt and most folks had light jackets on – that was smart.
The view the top was outstanding at about 0915 when made it to the top, cold windy but very clear. There were two solo hikers on top when I arrived, a few minutes apart a family of four (dad/2 daughters/son-in-law) and then a couple joined us on the peak – it was a nice crowd who dedicated a cold New Years day to Sitton Peak. I stayed at he top for abut 15 mins taking in the view, talking and had an orange!
