9-29 High Point
Started hike in the darkness at 6 AM. Hard to find the trailhead sign, used my head lamp to see. Started up the steep incline for about 2 miles, visibility got better half way up (daylight approaching) but was very foggy. The incline was pretty strenuous and the path was rocky and narrow. Definitely keep caution on your footing. After approaching the firepath, the hike got easier as the terrain leveled out more. Going further up the path, I got some great views of the clouds blanketing earth below! Majestic!
As I was approaching the end, I felt a migraine coming on. I don’t know if it was related to the altitude but it was pretty bad. Didn’t spend much time atop as I was focused on getting back to lower altitude. When I was on High Point, I ddi notice the observatory across and got some good views down below.
On the way back down, the migraine started to subside and I got to enjoy some more of the views going down. The Oak Grove Trail presented some challenges as it was a 2 mile downwards path, very rocky and loose gravel. Lost my footing a couple of times but didn’t spill. Just be careful going down!
Overall, it was a nice hike and probably wouldn’t have ever done this hike had it not been on this list!
