Two weeks prior to this trip we attempted the baldy bowl/ski hut trail and made it to the Saddle about .8 miles from the summit. That was a very long 11 hour day with all the rests we, my wife and myself, needed. We had planned to return and make the attempt with an over night. I decided to see if we could make the devils backbone from the baldy notch. This trail was very challenging from the start going up the Turkey Shoot in the scree for a steep climb to the trail head of the Devils Backbone. We are becoming more experienced with every trip and the last few have failed to summit. Prior to the Bowl trail we did an overnight to Icehouse Saddle and could not get any further due to fatigue and snow conditions. Today we steadily trudged our way to the summit in just over 4 hours. The trail was rather busy being a Saturday. The weather was cold and rather windy especially at the exposed areas and summit. We stopped for about a 20 minute lunch and photo session. We knew we had to get back to chair one by 5 pm or walk an extra 2 miles to the car so we pushed as hard as we could to get back. We were both extremely sore and fatigued about half way back. We made it to the lift at 505pm and were exhausted and ecstatic at the same time over our successful summit!
