It had been a very cold and rainy February. This first weekend in March was no different. Drizzly and grey. This was our first time to Sitton Peak. My hiking buddy, Stacy, and I weren’t sure what the trail conditions would be but we decided to give it a go. Worst case if the trail was in bad shape, we would turn around and go to breakfast with perhaps an adult beverage or two. We got to the parking lot early. It was nearly empty, which was awesome for a Sunday. The grey sky threatened but no rain yet. We headed up. Oak trees and lots of tall green growth. It was a pretty hike with only a 2,100 ft elevation gain. The trail is undulating, ascending and descending a few times until it starts to the base of the peak. The trail is flat leading into a narrow canyon and then it sharply turns to the right. The steepness is immediate. There were large ruts carved into the middle of the trail due to the rain. It was a bit muddy and slippery. We took it slow, choosing our path carefully as to avoid slipping down the trail or hiking off trail causing more erosion. We successfully reached the summit. It is a wonderful little rocky peak with a wooden sign. Someone had hung a necklace on it. Lost and found perhaps? We had only come across a couple who had passed us. They were enjoying the views when we approached. Soon two other groups joined. One group was celebrating a birthday by doing a 30 plus mile trail run! We were happy with our miles. We made it back to our vehicle with mud to our knees but it was a gorgeous little hike.
