The weather had warmed, which meant that bugs would be a problem on this trail. Luckily, my hiking buddy, Stacy, always brings her insect repellent wipes. We started down the paved road from Chantry Flat. It was a bright, blue sky morning. I love this trail and the hiking wisdom quotes on wood signs along the first part: “May Your Search Through Nature Lead You to Yourself” and “Take Care of the Land…Someday You’ll Be Part of It.” Passed the bridge, we got onto the Upper Gabrielino Trail to Sturtevant Trail. The creek was full. Lots of water spilling over the dams. We stopped at Sturtevant Camp to play on the swing for a bit and have a snack. Then, we started the steep trail through the enchanting and quiet forest. The deceptive thing is the steepness of the trail is hidden by the trees and growth, so mentally it is hard to prepare as you climb. It is enchanting but a butt burner. We finally reached the summit and the Mt. Wilson sign was still there. The sky was clear and blue. Beautiful. We traversed to the big parking lot where the Mt. Wilson Trail starts. My wife, Cristi, was waiting for us. We checked-in and had some snacks. As we visited, the clouds and fog rolled in. The temp dropped. Blue turned to grey. The first time we did Mt. Wilson in 2018 we did it in the rain. It seemed Mother Nature was once again about to drop some on us so we started the descent quickly. We took Mt Wilson Trail to Winter Creek Trail to Upper Winter Creek Trail. Along the way, we saw a family of deer. We would not have seen them except one was on the trail as we came around a bend. She gracefully traversed up away from us and the trail to a pair of fawns and two other adults. Sweet, quiet creatures. We made it to Chantry Flat where Cristi was waiting for us again but this time with sandwiches and beers!
