Myself and 5 others stepped of from Bailey Canyon at about 0635. Perfect hiking weather all day. Our first planned stop was the Cabin Ruins at about 2 miles in. From here we hiked another mile to Jones Peaks and then continued on to the Old Mount Wilson Road. The final push to the Old Mount Wilson Road intersection was a steep grind that has a cable on the trail to assist in the climb. I highly recommend gloves for this. We turned left at Old Mount Wilson Road, looking for a firebreak (hard right turn) that should have taken us to Mount Yale and Mount Harvard. We were unable to find the firebreak or a trail, so we doubled back. At this point someone asked how far from the peak we were and I replied (based on my research) “about 2.2 miles”. Boy was I off. It was closer to 4.2 miles. We followed the Old Mount Wilson Road until we were able to hit the Old Mount Wilson Trail and then followed it to the peak. We had 8.5 miles at this point. Going down was much easier as we followed the Old Mount Wilson Trail all the way down. Our total hike ended up being 15.5 miles and just over 5200 feet in total elevation gain.
