Don’t get me wrong: Castle Peak is iconic. But my favorite part of this hike is the ridge between Castle and Basin peaks. It may be the prettiest walk in the Tahoe region. Still a tiny bit of snow up there, and plenty of wildflowers and soaring raptors. And the ridge is always less busy than the climb to Castle.
Do be careful on the scree approaching the Castle summit. I’ve managed to slip there even with hiking poles.
