Classic Piestewa Peak
There is a reason why Piestewa is such a staple for hikers in the Valley of the Sun – it’s a classic that packs a punch in a good way! No matter how many times I hike this mountain, it never gets old. On the way up it’s not uncommon to hear and see a great horned owl or two. If you arrive to the summit early enough while it’s still dark and there aren’t too many people, you may get to see a family of ringtail cats (Arizona’s state mammal) and such a treat to see in the “wild”. And later in the morning, around sunrise, you may be lucky enough to hear the beat of the Taiko drums and singing by Ken Koshio, as I was this morning. ☀️
