As luck would have it, I happen to be in the area during a hellacious rain storm. I stayed at the campground the night before, happy with my choice since I had a couple trails to choose from right from the comfort of my camper. The ground were spectacular, the set up all around was awesome. i was kept up most of the night because of the noise, however. The dumping rain made for a noisy sleeping environment but I got my winks where I could. I knew I was going to have to push this hike hard to just get it done-the weather was not going to improve and I didn’t have a choice but to do it that day. As I was heading out a park ranger driving around rolled down his window-“hey theres a big rain storm coming still, the heaviest rain is going to be between now and 4pm.” Awesome. “Yes,” I replied back, “i know, I’ll be ok.”. I started up Lookout Road as it was the shorter version, as opposed to Azalea Glenn. I looked up at the mountain and couldn’t see it, which was a bit daunting at first. I worried about visibility and safety. As I continued on, however, I realized I was going to be on a completely paved trail. And while my long distance visibility was nothing, my short distance visibility was absolutely fine. So the closer I got to the top, the better I was feeling. I was completely soaked at the top, found the peak marker, and then ran the entire way down averaging 8 minute miles to keep warm! I only wish I had a view at the top!!
