Volcan Peak. Total Distance: 5.3 miles. Elevation Gain: 1,270 ft. Summit: 5,360 ft. Peak # 1 of the SoCal 2020 #sixpackofpeaks Challenge.

As you start this hike you will pass through an intricately designed Gateway at the trailhead. I found the trail relatively easy as it is a gently ascending grade pretty much to the top. The first mile passes through shaded areas of oak trees, after which it opens up into a wide expanses of grasslands and, as you reach the summit, amazing views of Julian and surrounding apple orchards to the west, Mt San Jacinto to the north, and the Salton Sea to the East. There’s no sign at the summit but you’ll see a picnic table, a kiosk, and the remnants of a beacon tower.
