Considered to be one of the hardest hikes in the San Diego area, the hike through Wildcat Canyon to El Cajon Mountain features severe ascents and descents across various scenery. The trail gradually climbs towards the summit, descending into valleys and climbing high peaks. While you hike, take in the breathtaking surroundings. You will know you are almost at the top when you come across the deserted, rusting jeep. From this point, the trail gives dramatic views of El Capitan Reservoir. The trail narrows as you approach a saddle and winds through boulder fields and dense chaparral vegetation. When reaching the summit, you are rewarded with 360-degree vistas of the surrounding peaks, lakes, and the far-off metropolis of San Diego. Rising above the community of El Cajon, El Cajon Mountain is the highest point on a sizable granite block that provides sweeping views of the other peaks, which include Mt. Gower, Mt. Woodson, and Iron Mountain.
