When I saw that Sawmill Mountain was on the list this year, I knew I had to complete the 3-2-1 challenge while I was at it, hiking to Mt Pinos, Sawmill Mt and Grouse Mt. It was a long drive north to Santa Clarita and then west to Nordic Station. Road up as of March 7th was clear of snow, though the shoulders and embankments of snow towards the top still. Got to the trailhead at 9AM, where we saw a few campers and following behind us were a series of cars getting ready to mountain bike. A plethora and very clean porta-pottys made preparing for the start of the hike comfortable. We started our hike at 9:30 and at the start, needed our gaiters and spikes and never took them off. The entire 10.8 miles of this hike required our gaiters and spikes. While hiking, we only saw two other people the entire time, which was amazing and had all three peaks to ourselves when we were there. Very different hike in that there are three summits, so needed to conserve energy in a different way. The hike was much tougher with the snow and I needed to check my way for way finding very often as there weren't very many footsteps going through this trail. Map was definitely required to complete this trail. Overall, a very fun hike! Would love to come back another time when there isn't any snow to see what this hike is like!
