My new favorite route to experience Diablo! Starting at Mitchell Canyon staging area, take main trail then first trail on left to head up to Mitchell Rock (1,080 ft), Twin Peaks (1,733 ft), Eagle Peak (2,369 ft) and the Mt. Diablo Summit (3,849 ft) – four peaks for the price of one! Definitely challenging, after Eagle Peak, you lose quite a bit of elevation that has to be regained! On the descent, took the Juniper Trail through the campground and back to Mitchell Canyon fire road which is almost flat on the last mile or so. Very helpful to have a break after the strenuous ascent. The weather was perfect, clear skies and cool temps, a bit of wind on the upward parts, finished hiking just before a storm rolled in. Not a lot of trail traffic until you reach the summit. Highly recommended. Approx 14 mi., 3,700 ft total elevation gain.
