Recent trail reports from Bill Williams Trailhead access indicated trail had a ‘closed' sign about a mile in. Ranger “C” said they just hadn't been in to remove the sign from last year's logging operation, due to all the snow, but that it was open, albeit snow-covered and virtually impassible a couple of miles up. She had personally hiked up to the first overlook via Benham Trailhead from the east two days prior with little snow to traverse. With only a day left in Flagstaff, I opted to summit via Benham Trail. Note: AllTrails shows Benham to be a 6 mi out & back, but that it only to the overlook, although the trail does go all the way up. I almost immediately got “off trail” notifications via AllTrails App at mile 3, but continued on, following the green diamond markers. The trails starts in Ponderosa forest and stays level for a good distance before the switchbacks begin. Trail is overgrown in stretches between miles 3 and 4. You'll do well to wear long pants and double tie your boots/shoes. Snow banks along the trail were all easily traversed and will probably be melted by now. (note: this is Benham Trail!) When you get to the upper part of the trail, it crosses the forest road a few times, so just look for green trail marker on other side. Still significant snow up top.- See photo with my hiking poles for comparison. This was along the road just before the fire lookout. The road had ice patches and slippery mud in places, but wasn't an issue. Saw NO others on trail. Blissful. Did see fresh bear tracks at less than 2 miles in.
