I hosted an 11 mile out and back hike on May 30, 2021 to all three peaks, Mount Pinos, Sawmill Mountain, and Grouse Mountain . The parking is directly at the trailhead and is free.
The trail is a great up and down climb of 5 miles with some switchbacks and plenty of great views all the way up and down. I would say it's more of a moderate to hard hike, I think if you have a few recent 10 mile or so hikes under your belt, you will do just fine. My favorite part is the view from Sawmill Mountain summit. I would also discourage you to do a late start, by the time we got to Grouse Mountain to rest and eat, the flies started coming out on the trail. Also, follow my path, you'll see I had to back track a bit on our way to Grouse Mountain, because AllTrails does not have the trail exactly correct.
Enjoy your hiking.
