Saturday 5/11 a great group from the Bay Area Hikers took on Mt. Umunhum hiking over 16.75 miles, gaining 2897 in elevation in about 6 hours. With the support of my fellow hikers they helped me take my 8th peak of the Bay Area 6 Peak Challenge. Yes, you read that correctly. There are 9 peaks to choose from to complete the challenge so just for the fun of it I am hiking them all!
It was a warm to almost hot day but there was a light breeze at times to keep it just comfortable.
We started out promptly at 8am and took the Woods trail from the Sierra Azul parking lot. We also had to be aware of runners on the trail because there was the 50K-100K Quicksilver race happening at the same time. But we were fortunate and only encountered a few runners.
We made quick work of the first 2.75 miles and then took a left on Barlow Rd. where the real climb began.
The flowers were blooming, and the skies were clear. Many pictures were taken as the group marched on.
We made it to the Mt. Umunhum trail, and it was just another 3.4 miles to the top. Along the trail we were in the shade of the trees and there were a few other hikers coming back down.
We stopped at the Guadalupe Creek overlook for a quick break then pressed on to the top.
We reached the summit at about 11am and it was busy with other hikers, bikers, and people who drove to the top with their families.
After lunch we took our celebratory photo and headed back. Â The trails were becoming more busy and we finally encountered runners from the Quicksilver race on Woods trail at we headed back.
The hikers were spread out over the trail at the end in groups and I finished with my group around 2pm.
It was a fantastic day to be on Mt. Umunhum with an incredible group. I have posted all the pictures and videos of the hike to this page. Also, there is a link to the All-Trails route we took.
